Taking
the Guesswork Out of Clinic Management: Learn How to Manage Your
Practice Objectively
Speaker: Alain Scheldeman
B.Sc., P.T.

-
How do you
know if it’s time to look for a new therapist versus if you are
overstaffed?
-
How much
should you invest in marketing and what return should you
expect?
-
How many
patient visits should you expect according to the rented space?
Unfortunately,
too many owners make crucial decisions based on subjective analysis or
a “gut feeling.” With smaller clinics, subjective management is
feasible since any error can be easily remedied. But as your clinic
grows, it becomes more and more important to manage the business in an
objective way.
Every successful
physical therapy clinic owner must not only know what
numbers to look at, but understand how they are derived and what
influences them. This includes industry benchmarks that will allow you
to set realistic objectives.
If
you cannot read and interpret the “vital signs” in your clinic, you
cannot manage objectively. You’re just guessing.
Just as physical
therapy is moving toward evidence-based care, managing
a clinic or a group of clinics should also be based in science. Empower
yourself to manage with confidence and sound judgment.
Alain
Scheldeman graduated from McGill University in 1983 with a Bachelor of
Science in Physical Therapy. During the same year he completed his
Canadian Athletic Therapy Certification. He is a licensed
Physiotherapist and Certified Athletic Therapist. Alain also teaches at
the University of Montreal in the Department of Physical Therapy.
Alain
started Action Sport Physio. The business grew from a
one person operation to 30 plus employees. Because many
employees wanted to be part of the family, Alain developed a franchise
business model which now has 19 clinics
in Quebec, Canada. Alain has two business partners in this franchise
operation.

'E'-Management: Business Skills for Building Entrepreneurial Capacity
Speaker: Jennifer Wilson, PT, MBA
As an entrepreneur in private practice, you understand the need to develop business skills. Effective ‘E-Managers’ also need to be skillful at building an ‘E-Culture’ to foster change and innovation. Creating other entrepreneurs in your practice will build a greater entrepreneurial capacity. Leveraging key business skills, such as leadership, coaching, and empowerment, can unleash a broader “E” (entrepreneurial) spirit and can help your team achieve its vision. The purpose of this educational session is to isolate key business skills to enhance effective entrepreneurship. Characteristics of entrepreneurship will be reviewed.
During this session, you will:
- Review characteristics of entrepreneurship.
- Isolate business skills to enhance effective entrepreneurship.
- Evaluate the key aspects needed to create an ‘E-Culture’: a culture of innovation, change, and entrepreneurship.
- Develop an approach to creating other entrepreneurs in your practice.
- Discuss ways to enhance the entrepreneurial capacity of your practice
Jennifer Wilson, PT, MBA is a principal of the Leadership Institute and Initiatives Consulting, the Director of LAMP for the HPA Section of the APTA, and a founding faculty member of the APTA E-Initiative (an entrepreneurial program). Realize
Your Business Vision by Defining Your Practice Structure and
Benchmarking Your Efforts
Speaker: Max Di Paola, B. Sc.
This
presentation focuses on establishing ways to evaluate success within
the different departments of a practice. It will show how benchmarking
benefits the clinic by assuring objectives are being met.
In
many respects, a clinic is no different than any other business. The
practice requires all of the same functions and departments as other
businesses, namely, customer service, service/product delivery, quality
assurance, advertising and marketing, accounting, human resources and
administration.
The
size of the clinic or whether these functions are performed by one
person or a group of people does not disqualify the need for their
existence. To obtain success, each department must set objectives and
then create systems and processes to assure efforts are aligned towards
achieving success.
The presentation will touch on:
- the importance of defining objectives for
each department
- the benefits of evaluating the efforts
through benchmarking
- the criticality of tooling (or
re-tooling) the systems and processes that support the objectives
Attendees will learn:
- that several departments are co-dependent
- how efforts in one department impact the
success of the other
- that benchmarking is a vehicle that helps
align systems with their objectives
- that systems may require re-tooling based
on benchmarking results
The attendees will take away:
- the importance of setting objectives for
each department
- the benefit of benchmarking each objective
- success is attainable if visions are
planned, monitored and adjusted
Massimo
(Max) Di Paola is the President and CEO of ADDA Tech Systems Inc, the
makers of Clinicmaster; Canada’s premiere software solution for PT

for the Physical Therapy Industry. The past 10 years were centered on
building Clinicmaster. The product is currently used by hundreds of

3: Practice Owner Development
Masterful
Leadership in Difficult Situations: Gain 3 Actionable Insights for Resolving Even the Thorniest People-Problems
Speaker: Paige Marrs, PhD
As
the owner of a physical therapy practice, being an effective leader is
a huge part of your job. You make big decisions and in-the-moment
choices. You juggle people-issues of all kinds (staff, contractors,
patients, referral sources, vendors, and perhaps a business partner).
Trained or not, being a skilled leader is essential to your success.
But
do you actually KNOW what to do when decisions backfire?
Or when conflicts
darken an otherwise joyful workplace? Or stubborn problems persist
despite your best efforts?
This session
introduces you to proven executive coaching insights that
could be the most useful leadership tools at your disposal. It draws on
cutting-edge communication theory and emerging knowledge from the
neurosciences to reveal why these obstacles are so common and what you
can do about them.
Learn to:
- Recognize and
neutralize the culprit that sabotages important
relationships and makes high-consequence choices overly difficult.
- Access your inner “toggle switch”
for keeping your leadership influence on a positive, productive track.
- Utilize a simple
diagnostic that gives you insights for leading wisely
and creatively, rather than being thrown off course or overwhelmed by
fear.
In short, you’ll
gain new understandings to help you become a masterful leader,
especially in difficult situations.
Paige
Marrs, Ph.D., is an executive coach and business consultant. She
specializes in teaching leaders to move beyond overwhelm and transcend
fear so they can access their practical wisdom and creativity.
Paige
holds a doctorate in Human and Organizational Systems and has 25
years professional experience. Her approach is also grounded in her
dissertation research about fear in workplace relationships, which
draws on the cutting-edge communication theory and neurosciences. She
works with business owners and executives in the USA and Canada.
The
serious sound of this notwithstanding, Paige brings intellectual
delight and interactive playfulness to today’s considerable and often
frightening challenges.

BONUS
SESSION:
The Business Summit Great Debate:
The Private Practice Manifesto
Panel Host: Erika Trimble, President and Founder,
Prosperous Physical Therapy
Organizer
of the International Private Practice Business Summit
This panel debate will
reveal the truth, and offer explicit opinions, about physical therapy
practices and what has happened to many of them.
Its
purpose is to be an eye-opener for those physical therapists in private
practice who have been struggling and want to understand why, as well
as to find more effective ways to build more prosperous practices
faster.
Only a small
percentage of private practice owners create the business they dreamed
of. That is, a fulfilling business that offers them fulfillment,
financial freedom and the lifestyle they want.
Only
a very small percentage of private practice owners ever achieve the
business results they dreamed of: the income they aspired to achieve.
But
even including the small numbers that have achieved their financial
goals, most everyone I know is not free from their business. They
created something they begin to dread after a while, and have no idea
where they’ve gone wrong in building their physical therapy practice.
One of the biggest
reasons for the many challenges experienced in this
industry is that most business owners completely ignore the most
important thing to focus on – creating greater value and results for
clients. This is the key business success principle!
The important
private practice paradox then is that you simply cannot do well, you
simply cannot have a world class practice, unless
you apply the business success principles that lead to prosperity!
This panel debate
will open discussion about:
- The current state of affairs in the
industry
- What needs to be done
- Why it needs to be done
- Expected outcomes if you do it
- Expected outcomes if you don’t do
it
- Who should do it
- Why you aren’t already doing it
- How to overcome the barriers as to
why you aren’t already doing it
The
time has come to set aside old ways that have not been working. The
time has come for change, change that will carry forward the remarkable
spirit of people in this profession. The time has come to build world
class physical therapy practices that focus on what truly matters to
you and your clients.
Join our panel of
experts, yes, the Summit presenters, in this conversation! Bring your
most profound questions with you!
